Steinhatchee is an "Old Florida" historic fishing village where Ernest Hemmingway would have felt at home. It is hidden deep in Florida's "Big Bend" area, also known as the Panhandle. This unspoiled area of Florida is tranquil, quiet and teeming with flora and fauna.

The Steinhatchee River meanders through western Florida and empties into the Gulf of Mexico at Deadman's Bay. The area is famous as one of the great fishing area in the world. Grouper, trout, bass, tarpon, redfish and Spanish mackerel are but a few of the fish that congregate in the river and Deadman's Bay to feed. Known as the "Scallop Capital", families find it fun to hunt the tasty crustaceans in shallow waters.

Tallahassee, the nearest major city, is located seventy (70) miles to the northwest. Gainsville, the home of the University of Florida, is approximately sixty-five (65) miles to the northeast of Highway 19.

Steinhatchee is a town which you may not discover unless you are an avid fisherman or hunter. Many writers and romantics visit the area to enjoy its rustic ambience.

The town is a unique time warp where century-old fishing camps dot the banks of the river beneath oaks covered with Spanish moss. Weathered docks rock gently in the wake of passing fishing boats. Unnamed, unpaved roads and endless trails wind through palmetto, cedar, oak, mahogany and maple forests. The sun's filtered rays coax large patches of wildflowers and native plants to bloom. Miles of roads and trails are wonderful for backpacking and bicycling.

The pristine Steinhatchee River, with lush tidal creeks and marshlands, meanders to the mouth of the river, affording kayakers and canoers hours of beauty and tranquility. Several restaurants serve succulent seafood entrees caught from the river and gulf.

Have you dreamed about the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life? Then Steinhatchee awaits your arrival.
